Dynamic Compression of Diopside and Salite

New Hugoniot data on single crystal diopside, CaMgSi206 (Di), suggest that transformation to a high-pressure thermomechanical state begins at ---50 GPa and is complete above 100 GPa, in agreement with other pyroxenes and silicates of geophysical interest. Comparison of the new high pressure phase (HPP) data for Di and salite, CaMg0.82Fe0.•8Si206 (Sa) with appropriate mixed oxide and perovskite ...

Shock compression of liquid silicates to 125 GPa: The anorthite‐diopside join

[1] We determined the equation of state (EOS) of three silicate liquid compositions by shock compression of preheated samples up to 127 GPa. Diopside (Di; Ca2Mg2SiO6) at 1773 K, anorthite (An; CaAl2Si2O8) at 1923 K and the eutectic composition Di64An36 at 1673 K were previously studied by shock compression to 38 GPa. The new data extend the EOS of each composition nearly to the Earth’s core‐man...

New cubic phase of lithium nitride to 200 GPa

We present a new cubic γ (Fm3m) Li3N phase discovered above 40(±5) GPa. Structure and spectral distribution of the cubic phase are examined to 200 GPa with synchrotron x-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray Raman scattering in a diamond anvil cell. First principles calculations predict a factor-of-five band-gap widening at the onset of the β → γ transition, consistent with an observed color chan...

Sectroscopic Studies of p - H 2 to above 200 GPa

Raman and infrared vibrational spectra of H2 have been measured to pressures in excess of 200 GPa and at liquid helium temperatures using new high sensitivity techniques. Detailed study of the pressure dependence of op conversion rate reveals an initial increase followed by a decrease above 1 GPa. The conversion rate then increases dramatically with pressure, and this continues to above 50 GPa....

Real-time band structure changes of GaAs during continuous dynamic compression to 5 GPa

Real time changes of the GaAs band structure were determined using time-resolved photoluminescence PL spectroscopy, with nanosecond resolution, in single-event continuous compression experiments. Continuous compression to 5 GPa over 150 ns was achieved by impacting fused silica buffers preceding the GaAs crystals. PL spectra and compression wave profiles were measured simultaneously for uniaxia...
